This weekend was an amazing weekend for weather, markets and getting work done.
The Salamanca market and Tas Farm Gate markets were very busy and pumping with people. Good weather probably had a great deal to do with it. It was sunny and clear skies and there were an amazing amount of tourists out. The boys had a brilliant weekend while I was away also. They got lots of work done on the strawbale shed and the boys had great games of soccer. Kais team are STILL underfeated and have not lost a game all season and they only have one game left. Tao kicked a goal for the weekend and was so happy with himself as were we. Next season the boys want to play football and so that will be interesting. Tao is being a budding John Butler currently. He is doing well at his guitar lessons and

My gosh, we have had some rain. I think that everyone is a little sick of it now. Thank god it is not windy though, it could be worse.
The paddocks are so wet at the moment that we cannot even drive the quad bike or the motor bike on them. The soil has been that saturated with rain it is now sitting ontop of the ground. A little bit of sunshine and it will all go away, but we are not about to get that either for a little while. Tao is at home with me today as he was sick last night (I say it is because he was wearing a t-shirt and jumper yesterday.....). It is winter after all. He is ok now though, it is amazing what a little day off school will do for them. Tomorrow I am going on an excursion with Kai's school class. That should be fun, we are going to the museum for an Antartic exhibition and then a play on a play ground in Hobart. I am not looking forward to the ear bashing on the bus though with all the noise, that is not going to be fun. Wednesday I am going to a business breakfast where we do workshops on various topics and this week it is going to be about Risk Management. These are very worthwhile going to (especially as they are at 7am in the morning). Last one I went to I got good business out of. Then at 11am I am invited to a GROW Launch in Salamanca about food sustainability with Mathew Evans as one of the speakers. Matthew Evans is the Gourmet Farmer on SBS, a very good show and lives in Tassie. Another busy week ahead but loving every minute of it. Talk Soon.... I have just found out some more exciting news... (I always am excited about something). I applied to have a casual stall at the Salamanca markets in Hobart that are held each Saturday. I have just found out that I have got in and start next saturday. Busy is going to the word that day I hope. The market is a good one and showcases a great deal of local art, produce and other items.
We have solar panels going on at the block tomorrow, friday the 5th of August as well. This is going to be so good as it will mean that we will have power and be able to work our tools without the use of a generator. This is quite annoying I find. The compressor will not work off the generator we have so we have to keep going home and filling it with air for it to work. A whole new world is going to open up. The system we are putting in is capable of supplying us with 4kw, but for the moment the panels we have will supply 2kw so we can expand later on if we need to. I will have some photos next week of the system and how it all is working. Have a good day. Well I have become a grandparent again.....
Skinny Saanen and Jill (our oldest mum) have given birth to 3 kids. We now have 2 more females and a male Saanen goats. They are soooooo cute and they have names already. We have a black and white one born to Jill and her name is Patch. The boy and girl are born to Skinny and their names are: Daisy and Stretch. The boy has such long legs and sometimes does not know what they are for and falls over all the time. We have Cindy to give birth yet and I think that she will have 2 or more as she is enormous at the moment poor thing. Jill is a brilliant mother and always has been, Skinny on the other hand needed a bit of help. We are getting our solar panels delivered and installed this friday, I cannot wait, we should have a considerably small electricity bill for the block when they are installed. The shed is almost finished at last so that means working on the next project, the poly tunnel and permanent chook house. I did not mention in the other posts that when I was at the Campbelltown show a reporter came up to me and asked me some questions about the property and wanted to put us in the paper. We have a three page spread in the Tasmanian Farmer magazine which is put out by the Examiner in Launceston. It was all very exciting and a really good article came out of it. It also paid off Dukkah wise as I have got new customers and quite a number of people have come up to me at the market and said they read the article. How chuffed was I...... The boys went up to the snow on the weekend as luckily for us it is practically on our back door step. They had a ball and threw lots of snowballs and went for a bush walk. This bushwalking wore Bodie out which is what he needed. If he is worn out it means that he has no energy to chasing my chickens, little ratbag. Well better go and do some more work. I have three more vegetable beds to prepare and paint so that I can plant more things to sell at the market. This is a bit of a process as I have to prime them with primer, paint them inside with bitumen paint and then spray the outside a couple of times with black rust proof paint. They then have to be taken up to the block and filled with compost and soil. Today I finished resawdusting the vegetable area with sawdust from the local saw mill. I collect this every week and gradually I am sawdusting the onion and garlic beds that contain 640 bulbs of garlic and about 1000 onions. I have another 1000 red onions propagated and nearly ready to be planted. I have to whipper snip the orchard as it is getting a little over grown and re fertilise al |
